Gluten Free at Disney World and Universal Orlando: A Celiac's Guide
Disney World and Universal Orlando are two of the safest places on earth to eat with celiac disease. Here is exactly how the allergy dining works at both, step by step.
Hi friends! 👋
Okay, this is my happy place, so fair warning, I could talk about this ALL day. If you have celiac disease and you've been nervous about theme parks, I need you to hear this: Disney World is one of the SAFEST places on earth to eat gluten free. And I REALLY mean that. Not "safe for a theme park." Safe, 100%, full stop.
Universal Orlando is right there with them. Between the two, there's a reason why I live in Central Florida... we have magic, AND all the gluten free goodies. Here's exactly how both parks work so you can walk in knowing the drill.
Disney's allergy program is genuinely excellent, and it runs the same way across the parks and resorts once you know the pattern.
Note your allergy on every single reservation. When you book dining online or by phone, flag celiac or gluten allergy on each one. It carries to the host desk so they're expecting you. You can also email Special.Diets@DisneyWorld.com ahead of time with questions.
At table service, you talk to a chef. Once you're seated, the host passes a note to your server, and the chef comes out to your table personally. They walk you through what's safe and how they avoid cross contact. This is not a hassle for them, it's their actual system. Ask for the chef even if they don't come automatically.
At quick service, look for the purple. They bring out a special purple allergy menu, a manager takes the order, and here's the part I love: allergy meals come out on a tray with an "ALLERGY" tagged toothpick so you know at a glance it was handled separately. Disney has dedicated allergy prep areas, separate fryers, and glove changes for every special order, and they'll often send a separate runner to bring your food.
Disney snacks you can actually have. Dole Whip is naturally gluten free (yes, that's the hill I live on 🍍). There are gluten free Mickey waffles, allergy friendly baked goods, gluten free buns and chicken tenders all over the place. You are not eating a plain sad plate here. You're eating Disney.
Universal doesn't always get the same gluten free love as Disney, and that's a shame, because they're seriously good.
Their allergy trained team members go through an ANSI accredited class with a five year certification that specifically covers celiac disease, cross contact, and safe prep. At table service, you ask to speak with a chef before ordering, and they take real pride in adapting almost anything on the menu to be gluten free. They'll bring out prepackaged items and walk you through ingredients.
For questions before you go, email Food.Allergy@universalorlando.com. They'll give you current, personalized answers, which matters because menus change.
Theme parks are supposed to be the trip where everyone lets loose. When the food is genuinely safe, the celiac traveler gets to be a kid in the park like everyone else, not the person quietly rationing granola bars and skipping every treat cart. That's the whole thing. Eating the Dole Whip IS the vacation.
You get to have the churro moment too. Yours is just gluten free, and it's just as good.
What's the Disney or Universal snack you've been dying to have safely? Tell me in the comments. Or message me and I'll plan your Orlando trip so every meal, from park to resort, is already handled. 💗
